Book clubs can be formed by all sorts of people: lifelong friends, colleagues, local libraries, or favourite bookstores. And while the end goal is usually the same — to enjoy a lively discussion about a great work of fiction or non-fiction — there are thousands of unique book clubs out there that come together for all sorts of reasons.
For example, last year in Evansville, Indiana, the state hospital initiated a book club called “Chapter Challenge,” which promotes literacy and other skills among its patients; and at the University of Toronto, you can join a class called “A Unique Book Club: Words and Images,” where members compare contemporary novels to related works of art (the class culminates in a field trip to the Art Gallery of Ontario).
