We asked you to share with us what book you’re most looking forward to reading this summer, as well as the ideal spot for it and what you’d choose to eat or drink while relaxing and reading. And even though we’re still recovering from the last long weekend, your responses made us long for the next one already!
Here’s what our readers are planning to read! Share your own Summer Reading Paradise dream scenario in the comments below.
Jackie B.Book: The Forgotten Garden by Kate Morton—it is required book club reading for our August meeting but after looking it up on Amazon, I cannot wait to dive in
Favourite spot: A hammock in the Grounds for Sculpture in Hamilton, NJ. It is my favorite place in NJ
Food/drink: French baguette, brie cheese, and a glass of Riesling. HEAVEN!
Eileen B.Book: Wild by Cheryl Strayed
Favourite spot: My favourite place to read any books is our cottage (picture this: screened in porch, comfortable chair, and a pot of tea beside me)
Food/drink: A pot of tea and anything that anyone wanted to cook for me (so I could stay with the book)
Gloria C.Book: Death Comes to Pemberley by P.D. James
Favourite spot: Lounging poolside
Food/drink: Enjoying a smoothie
Joeann C.
Book: There are lots of books I am always waiting to read. However, of the new releases, I am most eager to read The Casual Vacancy by J.K. Rowling [launch date: September 2012]
Favourite spot: I would be sitting on the beach, possibly Cabo San Lucas, with the waves in the background
Food/drink: Sipping on a piña colada while munching on some fresh fruit. A girl could dream, right?
Susannah C.Book: The Sense of an Ending by Julian Barnes
Favourite spot: Salty Brine (Beach) in Narragansett, RI
Food/drink: Iced coffee from the snack bar at Salty Brine
Deborah F.Book: Everything Was Goodbye by Gurjinder Basran
Favourite spot: A rented cottage for a week on a lake
Food/drink: Iced lemonade
Marilyn F.Book: The Origin of Species by Nino Ricci
Favourite spot: In bed (no back porch in my apt.)
Food/drink: I do not like to eat or drink while I read. Only when I read at the breakfast table
Wendy H.Book(s): I generally read more in the summer than any other time of the year, so I don’t have just one book, but I do have a stack of reading ready and waiting. Here is my reading list for this summer:
- The Best Laid Plans by Terry Fallis
- Cutting for Stone by Abraham Verghese
- The Sense of an Ending by Julian Barnes
- The Art of Racing in the Rain by Garth Stein
- The Gathering by Anne Enright
- Shantaram by Gregory David Roberts
Favourite spot and drink: My favourite place to read in the summer is on my balcony, in the mornings, with a cup of coffee. It may not seem like paradise to anyone else, but it is to me. If the locale were any more exotic, then I wouldn’t be reading a book!
Nancy M.Book: Prague Winter by Madeleine Albright
Favourite spot: On my screened porch in nice weather
Food/drink: A Starbucks non-fat cappuccino. Fortunately, there is a Starbucks very near my house, which makes all this very possible
Norma M.Book: Defending Jacob by William Landay
Favourite spot: On the beach in Maui
Food/drink: Iced tea
Carol M.Book: Lots of Candles, Plenty of Cake by Anna Quindlen
Favourite spot: My swing in the backyard
Food/drink: Cup of local roasted French Roast coffee
Eileen M.Book: The Little Book by Selden Edwards
Favourite spot and food/drink: Soaking up the sun on a chaise lounge chair on South Padre Island, TX, overlooking the Atlantic Ocean, or at Tuscany Resorts, Las Vegas, while suntanning at their pool
My second option for reading, is at any fine restaurant, eating lobster or shrimp, with a glass of chilled white wine or champagne, and delicious chocolate cake for dessert, served with coffee

I am most looking forward to reading Calling Invisible Women by Jeanne Ray coming out this summer. The author is the mother of Ann Patchett and she decided to start writing because of the lack of novels centered around women of a “certain age” dealing with issues of the “sandwich generation. Being of that generation I find her books insightful, warmhearted, and tastefully humorous. I want to read sitting on my balcony in the evening shade with a tall glass of homemade iced chi.
Thanks for posting..on my way to the book store!
