The student of the title, A Student of Weather, is Maurice Dove, a young man who arrives from lush and prosperous Ontario to study weather patterns in the bleak Canadian prairies during the Great Depression. He becomes the object of fascination for the two sisters, Lucinda and Norma Joyce. We follow the younger sister, Norma Joyce, to New York and to Ottawa, as she struggles to extricate herself from this obsessive love. A Student of Weather, Elizabeth Hay's first novel, was a finalist for the prestigious Canadian Giller Prize in the year 2000.

Bookclub-in-a-Box explores the following ideas:

  • How Hay uses the weather, as a symbol, as a metaphor, and as a character in its own right.
  • Everyone makes mistakes. Elizabeth Hay explores the repercussions that irreparable mistakes have on a person’s life.
  • The novel uses familiar fairy tales and other literary allusions to reveal information about the characters and their situations.
  • Hay asks how perceptions are created and how they can deceive.
  • The novel investigates classic sibling rivalry.

Every Bookclub-in-a-Box discussion guide includes complete coverage of the themes and symbols, writing style and interesting background information on the novel and the author, as well as a complementary RAG (Read-Along-Guide), a quick reference pamphlet offering interesting facts and questions to consider while reading the novel.
