In the very early days of WWII, the Germans suddenly landed on the tiny British island of Guernsey, just off the coast of France. Germany had decided to use the Channel Islands as a launching pad for their intended attack on England. Many islanders, including children, were evacuated; others stayed and found themselves face to face with the enemy.
Despite the curfews and strict rules set down by the Germans, the islanders coped as best as they could. One night, Amelia Maugery procured a pig and invited some friends and neighbors to a dinner party. However, they had to go home after curfew and they were caught. Thinking creatively, Elizabeth McKenna, invented an excuse on the spot: the group was coming from a book club meeting!
The details of the occupation and of the newly formed Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society are outlined in a series of letters from the islanders to the novel’s protagonist, Juliet Ashton, a former war columnist. Intrigued by the correspondence, Juliet thought to write a book about the island and their experiences. Once she arrived in Guernsey, she fell in love with both the island and its people.
