Reading Recommendations

The wonderful part of having a reading group website is that we get to hear from you – including what you are reading that may not be on our reading list. We would like to share these recommendations in this Reading Recommendations section.

Anita Diamant The Red Tent

This book is a powerful picture of the relationships of women. Inspired by the Biblical account of Dinah, this fictional rendition captures a first-person look into what women’s lives would be during this time. From being one of many wives, to being treated as primarily mothers, and little else, it manages not to be subversive, but also not overly feminist. The red tent is a place where the women go to experience their menstrual cycle, and to give birth, but it symbolizes the family that a group of women can have and be for each other.  (Recommended by Ginger in Florida.)

Pat Frank Alas, Babylon (Recommended by Ginger in Florida.)
Justin Cartwright The Song Before It Is Sung

This relatively little known book is a novel of ideas, perfect for a group that likes to grapple with issues that are not so black and white.  (Recommended by Helen in Toronto.)

Richard Russo The Bridge of Sighs (Recommended by Karen in Toronto.)
Jasper Fforde The Eyre Affair  (Thursday Next Series)         (Recommended by Susan in Toronto.)

If you have other suggestions, please send the titles to info@bookclubinabox.com.  Include the title, author, and a sentence or two about why you are recommending the book
